Mobile communication is no longer solely defined by point-to-point voice service.Increasingly,people are interested in integrated voice,data,and multimedia applications that rely on IP connections to bridge the gap between the traditional telephony world and the internet.the IP Multimedia Subsystems(IMS)of the Third Generation Partnership Project(3GPP) represents a major effort toward this goal.To maintain high end-to-end quality of experience across diverse terminals and network entities ranging from wire-line networks to wireless networks,it's essential for the IMS architecture to support media adaptation The media processing and adaptation component in IMS,known as the multimedia resource function processor(MRFP),is shown in red in Figure 1.A more detailed overview of IMS and it's components can be found elsewhere.The MRFP supports many media functions,such as serving and recording of streaming media ,but the video transcoding service is particularly relevant to the IMS goal of connecting diverse terminals across access networks.
