其实不难。
前者可以使名词也可以是副词
而后者是形容词

northern 比 north 表达得让人觉得更北一点
比如说你问路别人回答：
1. Go north.
往北走。
2. Go in the northern direction.
往北那儿走。
（in other words 也就是再往北的深处走/在深一点往北走）
northern 不过比 north 透彻了点
